Lance Corporal Nicholas Samuel Valdez Perez was the first United States soldier from Austin, Texas killed in combat in the war in Iraq. The collection contains the nomination forms and letters of support submitted by the veterans' organization Tejanos In Action to the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees in a request to name the former Southeast Elementary School in honor of Lance Corporal Perez.

Nicholas Samuel Valdez Perez was born in Austin, Texas on July 6, 1985 and he graduated from Travis High School in May of 2003. Perez was interested in pursuing a career in the military from an early age and transferred from LBJ High School to Travis High School so he could enroll in the ROTC program.
